Biltong jerky is a great source of natural protein and because biltong is cured and not cooked, it retains more of the nutrients than cooked meat. Not only is biltong a great healthy snack but it also carries many of the minerals and vitamins the body needs. Moreover, it has a high protein content due to the fact it is a cured meat.

Various types of meat are used to produce it, ranging from beef and game meats to fillets of ostrich. It is an excellent source of vital minerals like zinc, iron, magnesium and vitamin B-12, all essential for the body to function well. It quickly satisfies your hunger and sustains you for a long period of time.

It’s the perfect snack to take to work or to the gym or to consume when just enjoying the entertainment at a match or on the TV.
The word biltong is from the Dutch bil (“rump”) and tong (“strip” or “tongue”).
There are many different versions and stories about where biltong jerky actually originated from, but one thing remains consistent; it’s been around for a long time. It came about from the need to preserve the meats that were hunted or raised for food as none of today’s modern preservation techniques existed.

South African folklore suggests that biltong was born from the wandering Dutch herdsmen. The hunters after making a kill needed a way to preserve the large amount of meat they had just acquired so that it would not go to waste.

They learned the methods of dried meat from Dutch settlers and used salt and vinegar to cure the meat, and spices that were freely available to add flavour. It was then hung in strips over tree branches to dry naturally in the sun. After a couple of days it would be perfectly preserved and ready to eat or carry with them on their journey.

All of our handpicked meat is locally sourced, grass fed British Beef with total traceability back to the farm.
